Not always. For general storage or light use, a standard trunk is usually sufficient. However, if your trunk will be used frequently, for heavy loads and stacking or sitting on, or for travel, a reinforced (double strength) lid or base is recommended for extra durability and protection.
Good maintenance can really keep it looking great and functioning well for many years.
For Alloy Fascia
- Wipe with a Lightly Oily Cloth: If your trunk has an alloy fascia and it’s exposed to damp conditions, it’s important to protect the metal from rust or corrosion. Wiping it down with an oily cloth (like a soft cloth with some mineral oil or a specialized metal care product) helps create a thin protective layer. This will keep the metal shiny and prevent moisture damage.
- Tip: Make sure the cloth isn’t too oily or wet—just a light wipe should be enough to keep moisture at bay.
For Colored Fascia
- Dustpan and Brush: If your trunk has a colored fascia, it’s important to avoid harsh cleaners or abrasive materials that could scratch or damage the surface. A simple dustpan and brush set is a great way to remove dirt or dust without causing any damage.
- Tip: Regularly dusting or wiping down the colored fascia with a microfiber cloth can help prevent dirt build-up and preserve its finish.
For Locks
- Oil the Locks: Locks tend to get stiff over time, especially if they are exposed to moisture. Once a year, apply a small amount of oil (like silicone spray or lock oil) to the mechanism. This will keep the locks functioning smoothly and help prevent them from sticking or seizing up.
- Tip: Avoid using too much oil, as excess lubricant can attract dust or dirt and cause gunk build-up.
General Tips
- Dry Environment: If possible, try to keep the trunk in a dry, well-ventilated area to prevent long-term moisture exposure.
- Storage: If you’re storing it for a long time, consider covering it with a breathable cloth (not plastic) to protect it from dust and moisture.
